The Watkins Company has an opening for a Full Time, Accounting Associate in our Winona, Minnesota location. The Accounting Associate supports the accounting department within the areas of accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash controls, and tax. Prepares and maintains accurate and timely financial records and reports.

The duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to the following:

• Sets up new supplier accounts, matches and verifies invoices with purchase orders and general receiving numbers; verifies discrepancies and gains departmental manager approval, updates revised costs as necessary and ensures proper documentation.
• Processes invoices, which includes proper division of account distribution, determining proper due dates, and verifying correctness of invoices.
• Checks invoices for Sales and Use Tax, fills out tax exempt forms for Minnesota when requested by the vendor.
• Processes employee expense reports, as well as, contracted services 1099’s.
• Monitors accounts payable reports (outstanding general receiving numbers), matches credit memos with processed debit memos, and performs data into the accounting system.
• Maintains a payment schedule for vendors, produces checks daily, matches to vouchers, and maintains paid voucher files.
• Performs analysis of open/closed/pending invoices and credit memos.
• Audits manual purchase orders for all pertinent approvals and information.
• Assists in the preparation of tax returns per state requirements.
• Assists with account and bank reconciliations and provides results to Controller.
• Maintains unclaimed property files and filing.
• Assists with the preparation of financial and cost accounting reports, including but not limited to gross margin, product variance (PPV), manufacturing analysis and alcohol drawback.
• Assists Staff Accountants in locating and justifying general ledger entries, prepares journal entries when appropriate.

Our ideal candidate will at minimum:

• Possess at minimum an Associates degree in business or other business degree or demonstrate sufficient experience; Bachelors - degree preferred.
• Minimum 1 plus year(s) experience working in an accounting capacity.
• Demonstrate intermediate (or higher) proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Knowledge of sales tax rules and application - preferred.
