JOB DESCRIPTION
Your Role

The Health Transformation Lab team uses clinical expertise, data science, and technology to transform the way physicians and provider organizations work together with one another and with Blue Shield of California to help Californians achieve their best health. The Applied Quantitative Researcher – Clinical will report to the Medical Director – Clinical Product Development, Care Innovation & Technology Integration. In this role you will responsible for building predictive models by combining healthcare data from multiple sources and create actionable insights. You will leverage your data science and health care expertise to contribute to the design and development of products and services that exponentially, meaningfully, and measurably improve care delivery, identify opportunities for preventive interventions, health equity, cost savings and care management efficiencies.

Your Work

In this role, you will:

  • Act as the subject matter expert in applied machine learning to conduct exploratory data analysis and generate insights from structured and unstructured clinical and claims data using machine learning including natural language processing to identify opportunities to improve healthcare quality, performance, and efficiency.
  • Evaluate business requirements and develop recommendations execution plan if a machine learning solution is warranted. This includes and assumes the ability to create new, business relevant, health-care specific ML models.
  • Partner with product owners to drive lifecycle of machine learning project from ideation to model deployment. This includes and assumes the ability to delivers projects and models on time, as well as team-based accountability to maintain traceable documentation on ML models.
  • Investigate, clean, analyze, and prepare data sources for machine learning models and transition the models to production setting in collaboration with other teams.
  • Maintain end to end ownership of machine learning projects to conceive, develop, validate, deploy, and tune models.
  • Develop robust and reproducible model validation procedures to generate the appropriate range of model performance metrics for evaluation and monitoring.
  • Perform appropriate procedures to safeguard against algorithmic bias.
  • Create analytics dashboards in partnership with other teams to communicate recommendations and provide self-service tools to the end users.
  • Work with product owners and end users to field test integration of models with business processes.

QUALIFICATIONS
Your Knowledge and Experience

  • Requires bachelors degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science or equivalent quantitative scientific discipline. Master or PhD preferred.
  • Requires at least 6 years of professional Data Science or ML experience; or a Ph.D degree in operations research, applied statistics, data mining, machine learning, or other quantitative discipline.
  • Requires at least 3 years of experience working with clinical data or in data science at a healthcare organization or in digital health and experience working with health care terminologies (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, MS-DRG, SNOMED-CT, LOINC etc) as well as interoperability standards (HL7 v2, FHIR).
  • Requires at least 3 years of experience building, validating, and deploying predictive models on structured and unstructured data including deep learning frameworks.
  • Requires hands on experience with NLP techniques for text representation, information extraction, intention recognition or parsing text documents for clinical nomenclature and strong understanding of NLP techniques including Transformers, CNN, RNN, GPT.
  • Programming skills and experience with software systems architecture, web applications, software development tools, and frameworks desired.
  • Experience configuring or managing electronic medical record systems, or medical apps desired.

Pay Range

The pay range for this role is: $ 145200.00 to $ 217800.00 for California.

Please note that this range represents the pay range for this and many other positions at Blue Shield that fall into this pay grade. Blue Shield salaries are based on a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, location (California, Bay area, or outside California), and current employee salaries for similar roles.

Physical Requirements:

Office Environment - roles involving part to full time schedule in Office Environment. Due to the current public health emergency in California, Blue Shield employees are almost all working remotely. Based in our physical offices and work from home office/deskwork - Activity level: Sedentary, frequency most of work day.
