The Communication Design program in the School of Art and Design at Texas State University, a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) located in San Marcos, Texas, is offering an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track faculty position in Communication Design beginning August 2023. We seek a forward-thinking colleague whose teaching and research interests include Interaction Design and Design Foundations as they pertain to the future of the design discipline, with a focus on teaching conceptual thinking and technical proficiency at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Communication Design Program at Texas State
The Communication Design program emphasizes the integration of critical thinking with a thorough understanding of design principles and processes relevant to the professional practice of design. The program also embraces social, cultural, historical, economic, and global contexts to prepare students to advance knowledge within the discipline and for successful entry into the profession and/or graduate education. Students experience deep immersion in the discipline via a distinguished faculty broadly recognized for their expertise in both the classroom and the profession. Through an agile and dynamic curriculum, the program prepares students to meet the evolving challenges of professional design practice, as evidenced by a strong record of student recognition in national and international venues.
The School of Art and Design
The School of Art and Design is one of five academic units within the College of Fine Arts and Communication which also includes the Department of Communication Studies, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the School of Music, and the Department of Theatre and Dance. The School of Art and Design offers degree programs in Studio Art, Photography, Art Education, Art History, and Communication Design. These programs cross-pollinate, compelling students to search for deeper connections between disciplines. The school supports more than 80 diverse faculty members dedicated to fostering the conceptual and technical abilities of its more than 900 declared School of Art and Design majors.

Position Summary
We are looking for a colleague who will lead the revision of our undergraduate Design Foundations curriculum that integrates contemporary Interaction Design practices and reflects current skills, methodologies, and knowledge necessary for students to succeed in their course of study. The successful candidate will also serve as an integral part of the graduate Design Foundations faculty within the MFA program in Communication Design. While the initial focus of the position will be in Design Foundations, teaching assignments may change according to program needs and the candidate’s teaching and research interests. All positions are subject to the availability of funds.
Responsibilities
- Teach courses at the BFA and/or the MFA level and facilitate student success through
advising with a focus on inclusive pedagogy
- Participate in and lead curriculum development
- Pursue research/creative activity and build a substantive record of professional/peer recognition
- Engage in service to the program, school, college, university, community, and profession
- Facilitate student success through teaching and advising with a focus on inclusive pedagogy
- Mentor faculty colleagues in the Communication Design Foundations area
- Coordinate and collaborate routinely with the school-wide foundations faculty on art and design foundations curricula
- Contribute to freshman orientations and other student success initiatives aimed at achieving educational equity
- Mentor students with a wide range of cultural and academic backgrounds
