SUMMARY

Programs/sets up and operates conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and CNC machining centers to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

• 20% - Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
• 15 % - Determines reference points and direction of machine cutting paths.
• Included - Computes angular and linear dimensions, radii, and curvatures and outlines sequence of operations required to machine part.
• 10% - Prepares geometric layout on graph paper or using computer- assisted drafting software to show location of reference points and direction of cutting paths.
• 15% - Writes instruction sheets and cutter lists to guide setup and operation of machine.
• 20% - Writes program of machine instructions in symbolic language to encode numerical control tape or direct numerical control database to regulate movement of machine along cutting path.
• Included - Compares encoded tape or computer printout with original program sheet to assure accuracy of machine instructions.
• 10% - Revises program to eliminate errors or omissions.
• 10% - Observes operation of machine on trial run to prove taped or programmed instructions.
• Included - Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
• Included - Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
• Included - Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
• Included -Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.
• Included - Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Associate degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
