ABOUT THE ROLE:

Reporting to the program directors for the Public Art Program and the Public Art Conservation Program, the Collections Care Specialist is responsible for regular inspections and routine care of approximately 300 collection objects located in both indoor and outdoor settings throughout the City of Cambridge. This role is also responsible for managing and leading 3-4 technicians in the Summer CAMP (Conservation Art Maintenance Program) Intensive which occurs from May to July and takes place over a period of 6-8 weeks. During the CAMP Intensive, the Collections Care Specialist will lead a team of art technicians to clean, protect, and provide routine care and maintenance for up to 75% of artworks in the municipal collection. Working through the CAMP Intensive and with the Director of Art Conservation, the Collections Care Specialist will also provide more detailed reporting on artworks that require more significant care interventions and restoration.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The job responsibilities of the Collections Care Specialist include but are not limited to the following:

  • Annually inspect and report condition of approximately 300 collections objects outdoors and in public buildings in the City of Cambridge.
  • Manage and lead team of conservation technicians in annual summer conservation maintenance program cleaning, waxing, and using eco-friendly solvents to remove graffiti and residue from public sculptures around Cambridge.
  • Keep conservation supply inventory and, in coordination with the Director of Art Conservation, purchase new supplies when needed, and maintain supply budget.
  • Assist Director of Art Conservation in working with collection artists to coordinate care of their artwork and develop comprehensive pre-fabrication reviews of artists’ designs.
  • Document collection objects including artwork specifications, condition reporting, photographic images, and detailed site diagrams.
  • Assist Public Art Registrar in maintaining up-to-date collection records and data.
  • Work with Public Art Administrator to update and maintain Public Art Registry & Portfolio, interactive online public art map, and other physical and digital tools that engage the public with artwork commissioned by the City of Cambridge.
  • In coordination with agency staff, arrange for professional photography of collection objects and assist in creation of interpretive signage at project sites.
  • Attend and record minutes at monthly Public Art Commission meetings and at additional meetings as needed.
  • Provide technical support to public meetings as needed including public art selection panels and grant panels.
  • Provide basic art handling and technical skills to support agency programs as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience

  • Degree or equivalent experience in arts or arts-related field.
  • Experience working in Materials Science
  • Experience handling 2-D and 3-D art for a museum, gallery, or other type of art collection, public art program or comparable.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Candidate must be organized, have excellent communication skills, and work well both independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid driver’s license and experience and confidence driving small van on city streets.
  • Technological fluency with successful experience in using Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Cloud and Content Management Systems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to access, input and retrieve information from a computer. Comfortability with transporting and handling artwork; lifting, transporting, and setting up equipment weighing up to and over 50lbs, and use of power tools. Willingness to work onsite, outside, on a regular basis, in all seasons and varying weather conditions. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Standard office environment with shared workspaces. Fluorescent lighting, carpeting and air conditioning. Moderate noise level. RATE: $24.00/Hour. Sick leave eligible. Otherwise, this is not a benefited position.
