We are looking for a Laser Application Engineer that uses the application of mechanical and laser optics engineering principles to provide efficient, effective, economical and timely solutions to product and process development in the field of laser welding, laser cladding, laser marking and metal deposition. These can range from small component designs to extremely large plant machinery or vehicle projects, including oversight of design responsibilities. Develops tools, implements designs, or integrates machinery, or equipment, or computer-integrated technologies to ensure effective manufacturing processes. Is a member of the engineering team and supports the technical side of the marketing and communication processes. Works closely with Sales, Project Management and/or Product Management and Developmental teams to define the product development direction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of Laser Engineer include the following.

• Monitors manufacturing processes to identify ways to improve efficiency, quality and reduce losses, which may include analyzing and planning workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout.
• Provides manufacturing decision-making information by calculating production, labor, and material costs; reviewing production schedules; estimating future requirements.
• Recommends corrective or preventive actions to assure or improve product quality or reliability
• Assures product and process quality by designing testing methods; testing finished product and process capabilities; establishing standards; confirming manufacturing processes.
• Keeps equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services; following manufacturer's instructions and established procedures; requesting special service, as needed.
• Ensures adherence to safety rules and practices, especially laser and eye safety.
• Performs technical side of the quotation processes.

• Maintains open communication with sales/internal customers regarding required product performance and specifications needed to meet customers’ expectations.
• Prepares product and process reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends. May require maintaining a product and process database.
• Follows up on technical customer issues.
• Coordinates customer-sampling phase.
• May be required to setup, program and run machines, as needed.
• Provides product and process training, development, and guidance to appropriate personnel.
• Works with other functions within the organization to educate them on product information and updates.
• May be required to learn to operate production equipment and to run production jobs, as necessary.
• Performs budgeting and capacity planning for prospective projects.
• Develop processes for prototype laser welding and cladding projects.
• Develops techniques for laser processing and cladding projects.
• Establishes procedures to guide production and cladding personnel related to specification restrictions, material processes, pre- and post-clad heating requirements which involve the use of complex alloys.
• Analyzes and plans work force utilization, space requirements, workflow and design layout of equipment and workspace for maximum efficiency.
• Evaluate labor and physical site costs with the purpose of identifying opportunities for improvement.
• Confer with planning and design staff concerning product design and tooling to ensure efficient production methods.
• Develops manufacturing processes by studying product requirements; researching, designing and modifying equipment.
• Develops jigs and fixtures and research tooling needs for efficient manufacturing and machining.
• Testing and commissioning manufacturing methods and equipment; conferring with equipment vendors.
• Optimizes manufacturing processes by analyzing and planning workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout.
• Troubleshooting production/processing methods and equipment.
• Other appropriate duties, as required

Qualifications of Laser Engineer:

• Demonstrated familiarity with manufacturing equipment and processes, quality standards and product development.
• Demonstrated ability to be an effective leader within a cross-functional environment.
• Ability to guide, mentor and motivate teams toward the achievement of objectives.

• Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership techniques, production methods and coordination of people and resources.
• Demonstrated project planning and organization skills.
• Demonstrated familiarity with the end-markets, industry groups and competitive positioning.
• Solid engineering knowledge of machining processes, EDM, laser cutting, forming, and or welding/cladding.
• Advanced design knowledge of work cell type and functions, including Robotic, index tables, walking beam, conveyor, palletizers, etc.
• Knowledge of which coatings to use to prevent corrosion or wear; powder coat, anodizing, paint, galvanizing, etc.
• Basic analysis capabilities including structural, and thermal.
• Knowledge of ANSI, NFPA 79, and Automotive design standards.
• AWS codes and Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code-ASME Section IX
• Technical writing skills for creation of manuals.
• Excellent knowledge of safety regulations and the ability to enforce safety, including eye safety.

Education and/or Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology or Engineering, with experience (desired) in manufacturing engineering support.
• Master’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering or related field, preferred.
• 2 years’ experience in laser processing and laser metal deposition process development, industrial engineering or related experience.
• Should have demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office products, especially Excel, Word, Teams, and Projects, to manage a project.
• Should have sufficient experience with CAD/CAM Design software to work independently on assigned projects, as needed.
• Expected to maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

Language Skills:

• Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.
• Strong organizational and communication skills (verbal and written).

Mathematical Skills:

• Solid math foundation. Knowledge of algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics and their applications.
• Ability to apply advanced geometry, trigonometry and calculus.
• Ability to use Boolean logic.
• Ability to manipulate and write formulas.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

• Registration as a professional engineer in manufacturing, mechanical or electrical engineering. (Desirable, but not required.)
• Certificates of membership to the Laser Institute of America, American Welding Society (desirable).
• Certificate in Tru Tops Programming
• Certificates in PTC Creo, Pro/E or Wildfire and/or Wildfire basic training or detailing are required.
