Full Job Description

The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for eliminating waste in the company's manufacturing processes and applying innovative systems to improve company workflows. This role will assist in developing the criteria for availability, quality, and performance, then consistently measure manufacturing behaviors and evaluate their success.

The Atlas Gunworks Manufacturing Engineer will identify delays in production and sources of waste, then use technology and engineering principles to refine the system. This position is the driving force for optimizing the manufacturing processes to achieve world-class efficiencies within the Atlas Gunworks manufacturing center in order to support the business plans of the company and reports to the Director of Operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and review the procedures and equipment involved in the manufacturing process.
  • Research and implement automation techniques, test new systems for efficiency, and plan factory layouts to optimize production.
  • Create and maintain production processes as well as process continuous improvement programs
  • Work directly with suppliers as needed to ensure their capabilities and capacities support Atlas' growth plans.
  • Create and implement quality control processes and make recommendations for improvements in quality control.
  • Analyze production processes, schedules, methods, and other data and then provide management with reports containing the data and statistics to enable management to better understand future requirements needed for the manufacturing processes.
  • Ensure that the company's manufacturing processes are in compliance with all government laws and regulations.
  • Review and calculate labor, material, and other production costs, along with reviewing schedules and future production requirements to assist management in decision-making.
  • Analyze and plan workflow, equipment placement, and space requirements to improve manufacturing efficiency.
  • Coordinate equipment maintenance and repair services and make sure that the manufacturer's procedures and instructions are followed in order to keep production equipment operational.
  • Implement and manage OEE and CNC capital equipment monitoring systems to improve cost, quality, and factory OEE.
  • Train factory staff on how to properly incorporate new technology and methods into current production standards.
  • Adjust production lines and integrate new technology to improve the supply and production chain.
  • Work closely with Marketing and other teams to ensure that manufacturing capabilities and capacities are sufficient to support new product development.
  • Create test plans and manufacturing work instructions for new products.
  • Be the primary resource for continuous improvement of existing manufacturing processes for cost reduction, capacity expansion, or product quality improvements.
  • Work with product engineering to develop products that utilize Design-For-Manufacture principles to ensure best-in-class performance for cost, quality, reliability, and safety.
  • Work closely with the Operations team to ensure smooth hand-off as the products move from development to production.
  • In concert with Operations and Supply Chain, provide leadership in the supplier selection and certification process.
  • Engineer supplier processes to achieve Atlas' goals and objectives in quality, cost, and customer satisfaction.
  • Research, locate, and establish new sources of supply in support of ongoing manufacturing and assembly as well as new product introductions.
  • Interact with suppliers in a manner that builds strong win-win partnerships.
  • Ensure that all interactions with suppliers ultimately support Atlas' Lean Manufacturing objectives.
  • Apply principles of Lean and Continuous Improvement to reduce waste and improve the organization's effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Support efforts to locate low-cost, reliable sources to support demanding new programs.
  • Develop statements of work for requests for quotes (RFQ) for a wide range of complex products.
  • Work with suppliers to develop their capability to meet our specifications.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts on existing products to achieve cost, quality, performance, and customer satisfaction targets.
  • Submit and follow-up on CARs as needed and evaluate internal or supplier responses to ensure problems are not only corrected but also prevented from future occurrences.
  • Proactively search for gaps in quality and/or manufacturing processes at both Atlas Gunworks and its suppliers and implement changes to stop potential problems before these occur.
  • Work closely with all concerned parties in the implementation of ECO's (Engineering Chain Orders) that affect sourced parts.
  • Create new and update existing test plans for all products working closely with the Quality team identifying critical dimensions and inspection/testing requirements for manufactured and purchased parts.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2+ years' experience working in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Must have strong interpersonal / relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstrated strong knowledge of firearms manufacturing and metals machining.
  • Must be able to read and interpret technical drawings.
  • Must be familiar with ISO processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of project management principles.
  • Capability to develop a project plan and to manage a project to completion.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office tools is required.
  • Experience in the use of ERP programs is a plus.
  • Highly motivated problem solver with meticulous attention to detail.
