What You'll Do

  • Provide leadership, technical direction and oversight to Material Engineers, technical support personnel and potentially subcontract employees
  • Responsible for maintaining safe work conditions, safety awareness, establishing goals and expectations
  • Lead and manage activities for Mission Support in a manner that enables employee engagement; this includes leading engineering resources for problem solving and issue resolution to support the mission at Pantex; in addition, supervising a dedicated group of Material Engineers who function as Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) on weapon, special nuclear materials, packaging processes and associate procedures
  • Frequent contact with external and internal customers required
  • Manages department operations and ensures task completion
  • Provides direction to subordinate staff, assigning and scheduling work and monitoring completion
  • Uses established policies and procedures; administers group and company policies; a portion of time is spent performing team tasks; supervises line-level employees within single work group; team performs one task or multiple but closely related tasks; in some cases, may supervise more than one shift or work group that includes other supervisors; may manage entry-level exempt staff
  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders; teaches within a team and/or coordinates work activities across multiple groups; may guide work of line-level employees; works in close partnership with direct reports and supervisors at the same level or one level higher; communication normally involves specific elements of a project or operation; external contacts are less frequent and involve routine matters
  • Ensures that tasks are completed on schedule following established procedures and precedents; failure to achieve results many cause delays in program schedules and result in the allocation of additional resources
  • This position requires an understanding of material properties, testing and specifications
  • This position plans and coordinates material engineering functions, coordinates with the design labs, coordinates with the procurement function and improvement (VSET) team; assigns personnel based on operational needs; works with the other labs and functions such as materials testing laboratory, Gas Analysis Laboratory, Mechanical Testing, Procurement, Transportation, etc.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Physical Science (Chemistry, Physics, or related) from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) or Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant experience and minimum 3 years of supervisory/management experience
  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2 (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related science, 3 years job-related and at least 2 years nuclear experience, or a DOE O 426.2 alternative). DOE O 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. Preferred Job Requirements

  • General knowledge of materials engineering and testing, kitting, materials handling and the ability to supervise engineers and scientific professionals, including planning and scheduling activities between personnel as well as organizations working with external/internal organizations in a team environment
  • The ability to communicate clearly through both the oral and written word
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and SAP

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
