Job Description Position: Medical Assistant/Float
This position description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification. Position Summary
Medical Assistants perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the offices of physicians and other health practitioners running smoothly. The duties of Medical Assistants vary from setting to setting, depending on the size, location, and type. In addition to administrative duties, Medical Assistants perform clinical duties in accordance to state law.
The ideal candidate will have an excellent work ethic, be a quick learner, enjoy multi-tasking and staying organized, be flexible, and understand the importance of a positive, courteous and a professional attitude in the workplace. Great attention to detail and clear communication with patients are essential. Spanish speaking is preferred.
Position will be cross-trained with that of Front Desk Clerk. If you possess these qualities, please read on.
Position Responsibilities
Common responsibilities of Medical Assistant (but are not limited to):
Administrative
- Greets patients and visitors and assists them as appropriate.
- Assists in completion of registration forms, and gives instructions
- Answers phones and schedules appointments
- Check messages and return calls
- Appropriately and courteously screens solicitors for relevance to organization needs
- Explains financial obligations to the patients or responsible parties and collects co-pays and balances as required
- Preps physicians' schedules/charts for eligibility days in advance
- Communicates daily scheduling changes to clinical staff
- Registers and updates patients' personal information
- Files and maintains medical and financial records
- Optimizes patients' satisfaction, provider time, and treatment room utilization by scheduling appointments in person or by telephone
- Keeps patient appointments on schedule by notifying provider of patient's arrival; reviewing service delivery compared to schedule; reminding provider of service delays.
- Ensures availability of treatment information by filing and retrieving patient records.
- Maintains patient accounts by obtaining, recording, and updating personal and financial information.
- Prepares and types correspondence
- Processes, codes, and completes insurance claim forms
- Processes mail
- Purchases and maintains supplies and equipment
- Performs computer skills in patient billing, transcription, scheduling, insurance claims, accounts receivable, and data base entry
- Performs accounting, billing, and banking procedures
- Arranges for hospital admissions and outside referrals
- Calls in prescriptions to the pharmacy
- Performs Medication prior authorizations
- Performs Testing prior authorizations
- Performs Procedure prior authorizations
- Uses communication skills with appropriate medical terminology
- Follows appropriate legal and ethical professional conduct
- Performs other position-related duties as assigned
Clinical
- Complete visit preparations prior to patient visit
- Ensures that exam rooms and procedure rooms are clean, stocked, and appropriately set up each day prior to rooming patients.
- Prepares patients for appropriate exams/procedures
- Manages rooming and patient flow
- Measures and records vital signs
- Records patient interview, history, and chief complaint
- Performs medication review and reconciliation.
- Notes allergies as well as verifies medications patient is currently using.
- Medications patient has discontinued are recorded in visit notes.
- Provides patient education with regards to medications, testing, procedures, management of disease, home treatments, etc.
- Gathers appropriate documents and signatures necessary to assist the Clinician in making treatment decisions
- Receives and records lab/radiological test results (may include outside medical records) and ensures that those results and related reports are with the patient’s medical record at the time of the patient’s visit
- Performs routine screening tests
- Collection of lab specimens
- Performs basic lab tests
- Assists physician with exams
- Assists with X-ray (C-arm)
- Performs pre-procedure phone calls
- Performs post-procedure phone calls
- Prepares and administers medications with physician authorization
- Changes dressings, applies bandages, removes sutures and other first aid procedures
- Uses CPR skills when necessary
- Maintains supplies, equipment, stocks and sterilizes instruments
- Must use triage skills to make appropriate patient health assessments and to anticipate physician's needs as they relate to the patients' medical care
- Practices OSHA safety standards
- Performs accurate, legal, and ethical documentation at all times
- Performs other position-related duties as assigned
Other Responsibilities
- Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment
- Follows facility and Guardian Medical Care PLLC Unusual Occurrence Protocol
- Respects cultural and religious practices of patients and other co-workers
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
- Must exercise utmost diplomacy and tact to provide excellent customer service for patients
- Uses customer service principles and techniques to deal with patients calmly and pleasantly
- Upholds HIPAA regulations
- Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts
Position Requirements
- High school graduate preferred
- One (1) year Medical Assistant experience in corresponding setting is preferred
- Clear background check and drug screen
- Eighteen (18) years or older
- Federal-, State- and Guardian Medical Care PLLC-required credentials current and on file
- Able to read and write consistent with job requirements; cognitive skills as related to the position
- Proficient interpersonal relations and communicative skills
Working Conditions
Medical Assistants work in well-lighted, clean environments. They constantly interact with other people and may have to handle several responsibilities at once. Most full-time medical assistants work a regular 40-hour week. However, medical assistants may be asked to work part time, evenings, or weekends.
Physical Demands
Medical Assistants may spend a great deal of their professional day walking, standing, moving and manipulating equipment, as well as lifting and moving objects, equipment and supplies. It is reasonable to anticipate lifting 20-25 pounds in any given day. Lifting up to 40-50 pounds may occasionally be required, depending on the specific style or type of care provided.
In the performance of certain patient care tasks, the Medical Assistant may be expected to have sufficient manual dexterity in order to safely perform various skills and techniques. Tasks and expectations may vary by clinical site and medical practice.
Medical Assistants may also be expected to have a level of visual and auditory acuity sufficient to meet the needs of their job tasks. Corrective equipment and devices may enhance the person’s ability to achieve the appropriate level of acuity.
