R&D Process Technologist

Guittard Chocolate Company is an American-based chocolate maker and has made the world’s best chocolate for five generations. We are the oldest continuously family-owned chocolate company in the United States. The company was founded in 1868 and is headquartered in Burlingame, California.

R&D Process Technologist is leading process technology transfer from R&D to plant operation. You will be responsible for making sure that the new products make a smooth transition from trial and testing stages to full production. The Technologist will partner with the R&D team in innovating new formula and process, conducting plant trials, authoring standard operation procedures, and supporting product commercialization. This position is an exempt, full-time and fully benefited position and reports to the R&D Manager.

Responsibilities

• Scale-up and trouble-shoot/problem solve and optimize new and existing manufacturing and filling processes for new and existing products.
• Prepare the necessary documents and reports that summarize tests, observations, processing concerns, manufacturing constraints, project progress, recommendations and decisions as finalized.
• Support plant operation to adopt best practices in manufacturing.
• Review operation records and trouble-shoot production issues pro-actively work side-by-side with formulators / chemists as well the manufacturing facilities to provide technical expertise in the areas manufacturing and filling processes and equipment.
• Define the technical success criteria required for the successful start-up and on-going production.
• Conduct regular review with management on process deviations and resolutions.
• Lead product quality improvement projects.
• Support continuous improvement and other scientific projects as needed.

Education, Qualifications, and Skills

• Bachelors in Engineering, Food Sciences or equivalent is required.
• Minimal 4 years of full-time experiences in plant production environment or food production is required.
• Thinking and operating independently, while simultaneously focusing on many diverse priorities.
• Direct experience in process integration.
• Demonstrated ability to lead directly and/or influence indirectly.
• Strong understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP's), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP's), Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point Systems (HACCP), ISO, Regulatory Guidelines, Sensory, and/or Microbiology
• Preferred experience in food packaging and/or processing, with an understanding of processes and machine operation.
