Job Duties: A Day in the Life

NFM's Software Development Supervisor represents the Business Applications Department in a lead role, planning, scheduling and implementing projects and work flow management of software development teams, as well as analyzes requirements and develops program and system specifications. May work remotely from home; however, must live in one of the states where NFM operates, including Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska or Texas.

Specific duties include:
Representing Business Applications Department in a lead role, which includes:

  • Assisting with work process reviews and development of re-engineering plans;
  • Providing proposals for system solutions;
  • Assisting with cost benefit analysis of proposed projects and evaluating and prioritizing projects to meet strategic initiatives;
  • Being aware of KPIs of department and ensuring staff meet objectives;
  • Helping control expenses; and
  • Actively working on process improvements;
Supervising the planning, scheduling and implementation of projects, which includes:
  • Working with Software Development Supervisors to review project priority, status and resource utilization;
  • Reviewing and communicating risks to schedules;
  • Evaluating scope of projects/tasks to identify processes impacted and time and resources needed;
  • Coordinating prioritization, scheduling and implementation of projects with Business Leaders and Management;
  • Assigning resources to projects and tasks to meet timelines; and
  • Ensuring appropriate software development methodology is followed and that the user needs are met for each project and task;
Supervision and work flow management of assigned staff, which includes:
  • Serving as primary point of contact for problem resolution and mentoring;
  • Assigning tasks and projects to software development staff and following-up;
  • Supporting company policies and providing recommendations for staff discipline;
  • Participating in setting performance objectives and developing improvement plans for poor performers;
  • Participating in development of supervised staff's skills;
  • Providing coaching, mentoring and direction;
  • Recommending staff/career development as opportunities arise;
  • Ensuring departmental procedures and guidelines are followed;
  • Providing feedback and recognition; and
  • Encouraging and facilitating cross training of staff to promote deep application coverage for major software modules;
Analyzing requirements and developing program/system specifications, which includes:
  • Meeting with users/analysts to problem solve and define needs;
  • Identifying and analyzing possible system solutions/designs;
  • Reviewing options with users and supervisors to agree on design;
  • Preparing technical specifications based on departmental guidelines;
  • Communicating specifications with programmer assigned to the task; and
  • Performing additional analysis during development and testing;
Developing programs that meet requirements based on specifications and departmental standards, which includes:
  • Reviewing specifications with assigned analyst to confirm understanding of requirements;
  • Writing programs which meet requirements defined in specifications;
  • Testing programs and modifying until they run as specified prior to submitting for module testing;
  • Modifying programs as needed to correct problems and/or add functionality;
  • Communicating status of tasks to supervisors and analysts assigned to module and system testing; and
  • Coordinating updates to production of programs when they are approved by the analyst assigned to testing; and
Coordinating testing of programs, which includes:
  • Developing checklist of items to test for assigned tasks;
  • Performing module and system testing based on departmental guidelines;
  • Logging and communicating errors to programmer assigned to the task;
  • Retesting until programs meet requirements based on specifications and departmental guidelines;
  • Communicating status to ASD Representative, Supervisor and others assigned to the task and;
  • Coordinating testing activities with others participating in module and system testing
NFM's Software Development Supervisor supervises other Software Developers of varying titles.

Qualifications: Can You Check These Boxes?

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (Foreign equivalent accepted).
  • 6 years' postgraduate, progressive experience in software development.
  • Required experience must be postgraduate, progressive experience and include experience in: design, development, and implementation of Peoplesoft applications; serving as a project leader for complex projects; developing project plans; Quality Assurance; system design, analysis, and testing; and Microsoft Suite including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Project.
  • Available to provide on-call support 24 hours per day, 7 days a week as needed.
