POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Director of Pharmacy Services provides specialized pharmaceutical services to include advising physicians on matters pertaining to drug usage and control within assigned hospital locations; and participate in the development and delivery of continuing education programs for Pharmacy, Patient Care Services, Medical staff and students.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

1. Provides specialized pharmaceutical services to improve drug usage and therapeutic outcomes including but not limited to, advising physicians on issues concerning drug therapy, the inherent toxicity of drugs and their side effects, as well as assisting in the prescription of appropriate doses;

2. Coordinates the activities of assigned pharmacy technicians engaged in the preparation, labeling and delivery of medications and other pharmaceutical supplies in accordance with physicians’ prescriptions;

3. Ensures compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the dispensing of drugs and controlled drugs and the maintenance of required records;

4. Maintains liaison relationships with medical and nursing staff;

5. Provides timely information pertaining to pharmaceutical supplies, drug usage and compatibility, state and federal regulation regarding drug controls, and Joint Commission Standards;

6. Conducts and evaluates medication histories, assess compliance and suggest modifications so as to achieve desired outcomes;

7. Instruct patients in the proper use of prescribed drugs and make Patient Care Rounds with physicians to evaluate patient progress;

8. Individualizes medication regimens using sound principles, accounting for pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetic variations in drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination with responsibility for establishing and continually improving the delivery of Pharmaceutical Care to patients within areas of direct responsibility and assisting others in the department with the same;

9. Perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Graduate from an accredited School of Pharmacy with a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy.

2. Two years of clinical experience or acceptable board certification;

3. Must be currently licensed as a pharmacist in the Virgin Islands.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

1. Knowledge of the policies, procedures, rules and regulations that apply to the practice ofPharmacist in an inpatient care setting.

2. Knowledge of hospital/departmental policies and procedures, emergency protocols, Joint Commission, Center for Medicare and Medicaid services and all other local and federal regulatory standards

3. Ability to make presentations before management, public groups, and staff.

4. Knowledge of analytical and grammatical skills necessary to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.

5. Knowledge of basic financial reporting and census management.

6. Skilled in maintaining records and preparing reports.

7. Ability to (or possess the skill level to gain ability to) define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; also apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

8. Familiarity with spreadsheet and overall computer skills.

9. Ability to work with a wide variety of other professionals and staff engaged in the delivery of health care services.

10. Ability to gain the confidence and respect of the public to be served.

11. Ability to work well independently including without administrative support when required.

12. Organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills are essential.

13. Ability to work in a highly visible position undergoing significant changes with multiple constituents, each with demands exceeding resources.

14. Ability to work independently, as part of a team and be available.

15. Ability to recognize and maintain confidentiality.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work in a climate-controlled and well-lighted environment with a smoke-free policy. Employee will work in an office and throughout the building daily. Has Category 1 risk of exposure to infectious diseases, but receives training in hand hygiene practices, Universal Precautions and has access to personal protective equipment if direct exposure is anticipated; is subject to interruptions and noise daily.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $70,000.00 - $106,000.00 per year
