Energy Engineer

Sparhawk Group, an engineering firm based in Yarmouth, ME, is seeking an entry-level Engineer with 0-3 years of progressive experience to join our growing team. This position requires frequent (50%) visits to client field locations. Approximately 25% of site visits are day trips and 25% of site visits requires overnight. Project locations are throughout New England and nationwide. Our team enjoys the balance between field and office time.

This position will directly impact global climate emissions reduction goals through design engineering, energy efficiency engineering, and in-field commissioning.

The candidate will be addressing many different types of systems and buildings in the different roles of energy engineering, design engineering, and commissioning providing great variety and opportunity for learning. Learning will occur from many vantage points of the building environment.

This position provides the opportunity to meet with all types of clients, from field support staff to executives. Keeping this in mind, the position requires interpersonal and communication skills including:

  • Socially adept and skilled in managing different professional settings whether in the field, interfacing with peer professionals or in a board room with owners.
  • Has a strong and effective skillset with verbal and written communications to relay information, to manage requests and to address concerns.
  • Has the intuitive ability to work not only independently in an efficient manner but also collaboratively with other team members, subcontractors, and owners.

The responsibilities and skills this position entails include:

  • New building commissioning & existing building retrocommissioning
  • ASHRAE Level I, II and III energy audits
  • Performance of field work, to include commissioning testing and engineering walkthroughs. Lifting of test equipment and climbing ladders is required.
  • Energy savings and financial calculations
  • Project cost estimating
  • Mechanical design of HVAC systems
  • AutoCAD, eQuest, TREAT, Excel software
  • Other tasks will be assigned as needed

Recommended qualifications and experience are:

  • Energy Engineering
  • Commissioning
  • Hands-on HVAC controls work

  • Building operations experience
  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Engineer-Intern certification preferred, but not required.
