The Horticulturist is responsible for managing, designing, developing, and maintaining all grounds aspects of the Attic Angel property and managed communities. Includes, but not limited to, all outdoor ornamental landscape beds, turf, trees, shrubs, woods, and/or prairies, ponds, integral hardscapes, and indoor plantscapes. Provides direction and guidance to grounds staff. Coordinates and monitors contracted landscape services. Supports resident interests through leadership or participation in appropriate resident committees and through working with Life Enrichment in resident participatory programs.
*Essential Job Duties (in order of priority):

20% Lead Duties
- Provides leadership, direction, training, input into performance evaluations, and coaching to the grounds team and interns.
- Develops, submits, and monitors the annual department budget to ensure proper utilization of resources. Evaluates new products while adhering to purchasing guidelines and budget parameters.
- Assists with the selection of and coordinates and monitors contracted grounds services:
\* Advises in selection of basic services and special projects grounds contractors.
\* Ensures all service providers are following specifications, both material and procedural, and completing tasks and work defined in their contract.
\* Communicates with representatives from basic service provider regularly to ensure quality of work.
- Oversee volunteers:
\* Works with campus staff.
\* Coordinates opportunities for community volunteers, both individuals and groups, on regularly scheduled or one-time projects.
\* Works with resident volunteers on various gardening projects.
50% Planning & Facilitating Landscape Plan
- Designs, manages, and maintains all landscaped grounds at Attic Angel Community and managed communities including managed communities.
\* Plans/designs layout of all ornamental landscape beds which may include annuals, bulbs, perennials, shrubs, and trees.
\* Advises on hardscape design changes and additions.
\* Plants, waters, fertilizes, weeds, deadheads, and/or divides all bulbs, annuals, perennials, ornamental grasses, shrubs, trees, and indoor plants as needed.
\* Prunes trees and shrubs in correct season and manner appropriate for species and location.
\* Monitors trees for possible safety hazards and coordinates removal if required.
\* Identifies, monitors, and controls plant diseases and pests, as needed and as necessary with appropriate means.
\* Coordinates/conducts spring and fall clean-up of annual beds.
\* Orders/purchases all needed bulbs, annuals, perennials, ornamental grasses, shrubs, trees, and indoor plants, and grounds supplies such as fertilizer, soil, pesticides, raised beds, planters, signs, etc.
\* Coordinates and manages seasonal displays to include seasonal flowers/plants, seasonal outdoor lighting, other seasonal display (pumpkins, gourds, trees, boughs, etc.)
- Manages prairies, ponds, and/or neighborhood lawns on campus for aesthetic and functional purposes:
\* Controls unwanted vegetation.
\* Encourages desired vegetation and enhances with additional plants if needed.
\* Treats ponds for insect or other pests and algae using appropriate methods as needed.
\* Maintains and overwinters ornamental ponds, pond pumps, aerators, and plants.
\* Removes debris and unwanted grown from ponds.
\* Acquires permit for and performs prescribed prairie burns if applicable.
- Maintains all campus grounds in an environmentally responsible manner:
\* Uses an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to pest problem
\* Manages fertilization, herbicide, and other pesticide use to limit negative impact on residents and pets. Uses OMRI certified products when possible.
\* Composts plant materials or has plant materials removed appropriately from the property.
\* Recycles materials when possible.
\* Uses local/natural/sustainable products in installations where possible.
\* Uses only non-invasive species and removes invasive species present.
20% Regulatory Compliance and Safety
- Maintains all campus grounds and equipment to comply with applicable codes and regulations.
- Operates and maintains landscaping equipment as needed to perform required tasks:
\* Keeps power equipment such as UTV’s, tillers, edgers, etc. tuned and ready to use.
\* Maintains all watering equipment such as hoses, hose reels, attachment valves, etc. in good working order.
\* Maintains and/or properly stores all outdoor structures/furniture such as railing, pergolas, arbors, gazebos, umbrellas, etc.
- Assists the maintenance staff with snow removal/salting to maintain safety of all emergency exits and sidewalks as well as places, fills, and stores salt barrels as needed on the property.
10% Other Duties

Education: Degree in landscaping, horticulture, or landscape architecture preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Demonstrated knowledge of horticulture, landscaping, and natural area management
- Ability to understand and follow organizational and departmental policies/procedures.
- Ability to work with residents to facilitate the use of their gardens.
- Ability to work with vendors and contractors.
- Ability to pass Madison Fire Department prairie burn training, if applicable.
- Ability to work in partnership environment which fosters effective teamwork, adhering to the Attic Angel mission statement as well as providing exemplary customer service to residents, staff, and visitors.
- Demonstrated ability to perform physical labor such as planting, weeding, pruning, watering, and spring/fall clean up.
- Ability to work outdoors in cold/hot weather for long periods.
- Must have organization skills and an attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently without additional guidance and monitoring.
- At least 4 years of experience working with perennials, ornamental grasses, shrubs, trees, prairies, and ponds in a similar environment.
- Knowledge of pesticides.
