At SBELIH, inpatients are under the care of world-renowned hospitalists, physicians who specialize in inpatient medicine and taking care of hospitalized patients in place of a primary care provider. Centers of excellence include Medical-Surgical, Advanced Ambulatory Care, Behavioral Health, Emergency, Geriatric, Diagnostic Services, Physical Therapy and Gastrointestinal Services. SBELIH is fully accredited by the Joint Commission and has been awarded the Gold Seal of Approval.

The opportunity:

In this role you will be responsible for providing psychotherapy and counseling services to patients experiencing problems with psychosocial adjustment including discharge planning and arranging financial assistance.

How you will impact the Hospital

• Interviews patients, relatives, friends and others to assess patient’s psychosocial history and current family situation. Psychosocial assessment must be documented for all patients, except when clinically contraindicated, in which case the contraindication must be documented on the patient’s chart.

• Assists patients and families with problems arising from patient’s admission to the hospital and develops discharge plans and post hospital care in conjunction with physicians. Advises and assists families in applying for financial/medical assistance.
• Provides individual, marital, family and group psychotherapy.
• Maintains a file of community resources
• Assists in establishing hospital policies on acceptance and referral of patients
• Attends multidisciplinary staff conferences to help generate treatment plans.
• Regularly attends monthly community meetings as assigned and informs staff of any pertinent information
• Participates in community activities concerned with mental health issues. Addresses lay and professional groups to define functions of hospital psychiatric services. Assists in developing favorable attitudes in the community toward recognition and treatment of mental disorders.
• Follows the standards of practice established in the Social Services Department Policy and Procedure Manual.

To be successful:

• Master's Degree in Social Work
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a psychiatric or mental health facility.
• Current and valid NYS Social Worker licensure and certification ( LMSW or LCSW)
• Ability to work effectively with others
• Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
• Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
• Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
