Job Description :

Under the supervision of the Electric Foreman, the employee erects, maintains and repairs steel, concrete, and wooden poles and prefabricated light-duty metal towers, cable, and related equipment in order to construct transmission and distribution power lines to conduct electricity between generating points and the end user. The employee prepares materials for use and performs construction and maintenance. The employee also works in potentially hazardous conditions during major storms and other outages. The job requires physical ability and dexterity to climb poles and operate equipment and tools. Employee receives specific instructions from supervisor. Work is performed under established procedures with frequent inspections during progress with final inspection of completed work. The employee participates in the HU on-call rotation schedule. This job is fully qualified and knowledgeable of all lineman duties in the electric department. This job is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment background check and random drug screens.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following list was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not exhaustive and other duties may be required and assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Lineman Operations. Employee performs lineman duties on new construction, repair, and maintenance of power lines both overhead and underground, traffic control circuits and streetlights.

1. Performs work on HU substation breakers and transformers.

2. Installs primary and secondary lines and meters.

3. Installs and terminates underground conductors.

4. Sets new poles and light-duty towers.

5. Works on energized lines up to 46 kilovolts majority of time.

6. Analyzes work orders, blueprints, and materials, making necessary adjustments after consulting with Electric Superintendent and Foreman.

7. Performs maintenance, construction, and switching in substations for both distribution and transmission voltages.

8. Installs and removes transformers, including primary and secondary current transformers and self-contained meters; cut-outs, disconnecting switches, circuit breakers and other overhead line and underground devices.

9. Repairs and replaces overhead transmission and distribution power lines and associated equipment.

10. Pulls primary lines under tension over streets and right-of-way (ROW).

11. Uses safety equipment, such as hot sticks and cover-ups, to safely work on or near energized conductors and associated electrical equipment.

12. De-energizes and grounds power lines and equipment to permit safe working conditions, as needed.

13. Troubleshoots overhead and underground lines and equipment.

14. Installs and maintains athletic field lighting for City of Hartselle Parks and Recreation.

15. Installs and maintains traffic and streetlights for the City of Hartselle.

16. Responds to trouble calls when directed; participates in the routine on-call rotation.

17. Operates various heavy equipment in the installation and maintenance of electric systems.

18. Climbs poles or uses bucket truck to reach service lines and overhead conductors.

19. Installs and maintains polyphase metering applications.

20. Works in potentially hazardous conditions during major storms and other outages.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Equipment Operation. Employee operates heavy vehicles and operates various types of equipment and tools.

1. Operates a bush hog to clear and maintain ROW.

2. Operates a bucket attached to a truck-mounted boom to service power lines.

3. Operates a chainsaw and chipper when clearing trees.

4. Operates a trencher, backhoe, line puller and tensioner.

5. Drives trucks, operates equipment, and loads and unloads materials.

6. Stocks work trucks using job materials lists.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Electrical Service ROW Maintenance. Employee performs operations to maintain electrical ROW.

1. Conducts line clearing around energized lines.

2. Removes trees from over and around energized lines and over houses.

3. Applies herbicides as needed to ROW to control weeds.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Assists in groundwork to include putting out safety signs, flagman duties, and spotter.

2. Performs other job-related duties and tasks as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. *Knowledge of Hartselle Utilities (HU) rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

2. *Knowledge of HU service territory and systems.

3. *Knowledge of heavy equipment operation and usage.

4. *Knowledge of HU and APPA safety practices and procedures.

5. Knowledge of electric principles and properties.

6. Knowledge of electrical power distribution systems.

7. Knowledge of American Public Power Association (APPA), Tennessee Valley Public Power Association (TVPPA), and/or National Electric Safety Code rules and regulations.

8. Knowledge of substation operation and maintenance

9. Knowledge of power transformer usage in power systems.

10. Knowledge of safety rules including accident causation and prevention.

11. Communication skills to effectively communicate internally and externally, both orally and in writing.

12. Reading skills to understand and interpret technical schematics and drawings, operator manuals, directives, procedures, and instructions.

13. Verbal skills to communicate effectively with supervisor and co-workers.

14. Writing skills to clearly and neatly complete routine logs, forms, and records.

15. Math skills to perform basic calculations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and basic electrical engineering calculations.

16. Skills in rescue procedures, including pole top rescue, and capable of performing CPR and basic first aid accordingly.

17. Ability to anticipate system upgrade needs.

18. Ability to work with and around energized lines up to 46 kilovolts.

19. Ability to troubleshoot electrical system problems.

20. Ability to organize and multi-task.

21. Ability to read and interpret gauges and measurements.

22. Ability to operate heavy equipment.

23. Ability to use various hand/power tools.

24. Ability to use herbicides.

25. Ability to climb poles and work at heights above ten (10) feet.

26. Ability to cut trees and limbs without causing damage to surrounding structures.

27. Ability to respond to unusual and hazardous circumstances with sound judgment.

28. Ability to work in hazardous situations in adverse weather conditions.

29. Ability to rig systems to erect poles/towers and string power lines.

30. Ability to wear/use personal protective equipment.

31. Ability to drive.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Possess a high school diploma or GED with completion of Algebra I or equivalent; courses in basic electricity are preferred.

2. Minimum of five (5) years of work experience as a B-Class Lineman ; or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills and abilities commensurate with the requirements of this job.

3. Completion of an approved Advanced Lineman training program acceptable to HU.

4. Completion of CPR/First Aid training acceptable to HU.

5. Possess a current and valid class A CDL or ability to obtain within ninety (90) days of hire and be insurable.

6. Must reside within a ten (10) mile radius of HU’s electric pole yard.

7. Ability to travel as needed for work and training.

8. Ability to work non-standard hours and participate in HU on-call rotation schedule.

9. Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and random drug screenings.

Physical Demands

The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 lbs., crouching, or crawling in restricted areas.

Work Environment

The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., working at great heights under extreme weather conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $28.75 - $42.50 per hour
