Nature of Job

Record general ledger accounting activity and perform regular account reconciliations; responsible for selected subsidiary ledgers; assist in preparation and analysis of financial results; provide backup support for Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly journal entries related to cash, fixed assets, reinsurance, investments, revenue and expenses. This includes maintaining work papers for support of balances and transactions.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts for selected balance sheet and income statement accounts.
  • Review revenues and expenses to ensure appropriate period recognition.
  • Record and reconcile investment transactions; prepare Schedule D.
  • Manage fixed asset accounting.
  • Record and reconcile intercompany transactions.
  • Prepare all bank account reconciliations monthly, except payroll.
  • Create and maintain custom accounting reports.
  • Manage state premium tax files according to state requirements; prepare and file premium tax, fire tax, mine subsidence and other financial reports with state insurance departments.
  • Maintain records of Guaranty Fund liabilities for each state.
  • Assist with filing and reporting of annual and quarterly NAIC statement.
  • Maintain Accounting Department record retention.
  • Serve as resource for Claims Department regarding agent drafts, claim checks research, stop payments, etc.
  • Provide backup for Accounts Receivable.
  • Provide backup for Accounts Payable.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.




  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting or business or five years' equivalent experience.
  • Ability to complete detail work accurately and on a timely basis.
  • Ability to work effectively with company computer systems.
  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel; Crystal Reports preferred.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and to exercise sound judgment based on company policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work with and maintain important company information in strict confidence.
  • Commitment to company values and customer service.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
