POSITION SUMMARY:

Research Scientists are individuals holding a MD or equivalent terminal degree who play a major role in enabling the Trauma research program through collaborative and collegial interactions with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, staff and collaborators. The Research Scientist will work closely with the Director of Research, Clinical Research Manager and Trauma Surgeons to oversee Trauma research projects and clinical trials conducted at University Medical Center to ensure compliance with protocol, federal, and institutional requirements.

The primary responsibility of the Research Scientist is to act as a liaison between the hospital, sponsor, patient, investigator and collaborators to implement Trauma research and clinical trials. Responsible for designing and conducting community consultation and public disclosure for Exception From Informed Consent (EFIC) trials. Recruit, screen and enroll patients in trauma clinical trials; ensuring study compliance and close patient monitoring. Duties include training hospital staff, residents, students and research staff.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Terminal Degree (M.D,/Ph.D./D.V.M.,etc.)

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES TYPICALLY NEEDED TO PERFORM THIS JOB SUCCESSFULLY:

  • Experience working in a clinical environment
  • Available on weekends and evenings for emergency situations or answer questions as needed.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to use various standardized word processing and spreadsheet software required; working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access software preferred.
  • Ability to perform, manage, and balance multiple projects and tasks simultaneously, work under time constraints, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently.

1. Knowledge of federal research grants and/or industry sponsored clinical trials

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

An incumbent assigned this classification will perform some or all of the following universal essential functions approximately 95 percent of his/her time:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

Function: Trauma Research Implementation

Servers as a liaison between University Medical Center, sponsors, investigator, emergency medical service providers and collaborators to implement trauma research projects and clinical trials. Arrange site qualification visits and tour site with monitors to ensure site qualification.

Design and conduct community consultation and public disclosure for Exception From Informed Consent (EFIC) trials. Arrange research team meetings with investigators, emergency medical service providers, research and medical staff to discuss new study protocols. Train and prepare hospital staff, residents, students, emergency medical service providers and other collaborators on research projects. Develop 24/7 trauma research coverage with research staff and students.

Performance Standards:

Research projects are setup according to hospital, sponsor, federal and local guidelines. Community consultation and public disclosure is conducted by according to federal guidelines.

Function: Trauma Research Enrollment and Follow-up

Recruits, screens, enrolls and follows study patients, and performs the associated data collection, entry, and quality control activities and ensuring protocol compliance. Close patient monitoring and review of medical records to identify adverse events. Responsible for maintaining and coordinating the 24/7 coverage needs of trauma research. Available on weekends and evenings for emergency situations or to answer questions as needed.

Conducts ongoing training with hospital staff, residents, students, emergency medical service providers and other collaborators on research projects. Conducts research team meetings with investigators, emergency medical service providers, research and medical staff to discuss progress of research projects and recruitment efforts. Performance Standards: FDA and local and central IRB guidelines are followed. Protocol guidelines are followed. Patient adverse events are reported and documented.
