Human Resources Generalist

Description:

Provide company-wide management and employee support for a wide variety of human resource related matters including, but not limited to, talent acquisition, legal compliance, recordkeeping, employee retention, training and development, employee relations, and performance management.

Reporting Relationships:

The HR Generalist reports directly to the Director, Human Resources and is located in the Corporate office in Mobile, Alabama.

Primary Job Duties:

  • Participate in and provide coordination for various recruitment activities such as posting jobs, maintaining the S&S careers webpage, sourcing candidates, screening applicants, scheduling and conducting interviews, checking references and credentials, and attending job/career fairs to build community partnerships and recruit high quality talent.
  • Develop and maintain job descriptions, ensuring they are current and accurate.
  • Complete new hire onboarding procedures for the Mobile office.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of HR related regulatory reporting (i.e., EEO and VETS).
  • Support the administration of the performance management and salary review processes.
  • Participate in HR compliance audits and action planning.
  • Assist with policy development and implementation as well as updates to the employee handbook.
  • Assist with wage surveys and compensation analysis as needed.
  • Respond to HR inquiries, provide coaching, and assist in administering HR policies and procedures.
  • May provide coordination for current, modified, or new programs/initiatives such as wellness, service award, uniforms, Apprentice Programs, and/or Affirmative Action programs.
  • Ensure timely documentation of employee matters and accurate entries into HR files and systems.
  • May prepare internal employee communications including coordination of the Company newsletter.
  • Assist in organizing and delivering company events.
  • Provide HR project management for a variety of initiatives. Collect, maintain, and utilize HR data and analytics to propose and support HR projects and/or other process improvement initiatives. Lead and/or participate in special teams or assignments.
  • Work with the Director, HR to analyze training needs as well as develop, schedule, coordinate, present, and track a wide variety of training and employee/leadership development programs.
  • Model the way and act in accordance with the Company’s Core Values at all times.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the S&S culture and become an ambassador of that culture for current and future talent.
  • Support business objectives and key organizational priorities. Submit reports on general HR activity.
  • In addition to building and maintaining a cohesive team atmosphere with the HR Department, must maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with employees, management, vendors, executive staff and members of the community across all locations and business units.
  • Keep up to date with latest HR trends and best practices.
  • Provide back-up for other HR team members, especially in the areas of payroll, benefits, and recordkeeping.
  • Perform other duties as required and or assigned by executive management.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or other related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of full-time experience in a Human Resources specialist or generalist role.
  • Solid understanding of labor and employment laws and regulations and where to access additional regulatory information when needed.
  • Proficient in talent acquisition.
  • Proven experience as a leader of successful individuals and teams.
  • Experience working against deadlines and a good track record of completing projects on time.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with meticulous attention to detail, able to multitask and prioritize workflow
  • Advanced communication skills that allow for productive working relationships
  • Solid project management, decision making, and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with computer systems, proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe, and Outlook
  • Ability to work effectively as a team player
  • Demonstrates strong work ethic and is a self-starter with the ability to use independent judgement
  • Demonstrates desire for a long-term career and is commitment to continuous improvement

  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to drive a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to travel by car and plane, especially to S&S Branch offices, for short-term overnight stays.
  • Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing to a variety of audiences
  • Ability to sit at a desk/computer station and work on a computer for long periods of time. Requires typing and using a mouse
  • Ability to walk and maneuver self safely around the offices, warehouses, and fabrication shop
  • Ability to wear PPE such as steel toe shoes, ear plugs, safety glass, and a hard hat on occasion
  • Minimal lifting, pushing, or pulling required
  • Willingness and ability to work long hours occasionally, when necessary
  • Ability to pass post-offer and random drug screens

Desired Qualifications:

  • PHR, SPHR, SHRM -CP, or SHRM-SCP certification
  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or Master’s Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Human Resources, Talent Management, or Organizational Development
  • 5+ years of human resources generalist experience with involvement in recruiting, onboarding, performance management, employee relations, compensation, benefits administration, regulatory compliance, coaching and development
  • 2+ years of experience as a trainer including presentation of leadership development curriculum
  • 2+ years of experience as a recruiter
  • Experience with administration of Apprenticeship Programs
  • Experience maintaining Affirmative Action Programs
  • Experience managing unemployment insurance, EEO, FLSA, or other claims
  • Experience leading employee disciplinary meetings and workplace investigations
  • Exceptional conflict management skills
  • Deep understanding of state (especially Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, and North Carolina) and federal labor and employment laws and regulations
  • Experience with an HRIS, ATS, and/or LMS, especially ADP Workforce Now and ADP Payroll
  • Highly proficient with PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Adobe, and Outlook with experience training others
  • Experience working with SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, GoToMeetings, Zoom, and SurveyMonkey
  • Payroll processing experience and experience utilizing electronic employee records
  • Experience in the construction industry
