FLSA: Hourly Non-Exempt

Reports To: Control Room Supervisor

SUMMARY

The Operations Technician observes, operates and makes record of all operating equipment and their auxiliaries as well as performs maintenance duties as needed. The Technician trains, instructs, follows established procedures that ensure the safety of one’s self and others, works independently and with other technicians, and interacts with supervision in the execution of assigned duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Properly relieves the watch.
  • Checks the operation and readiness of all equipment in assigned area and assists others as needed.
  • Communicates effectively via verbal, written, or electronic documentation to supervision.
  • Attends job related training classes.
  • Adheres to all safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs Lock out / Tag out of systems and equipment in a safe and professional manner.
  • Performs chemical regenerations and checks the results.
  • Check, adjust, and perform sample checks of plant chemistry.
  • Performs routine operational functions such as backwashes, etc.
  • Performs maintenance as needed.
  • Uses the Maximo work management system and other data entry systems.
  • Performs data collection and keeps proper logs.
  • Responsible for housekeeping in assigned areas.
  • Assists in “on the job training” of other employees to gain an understanding of the power plant cycle.
  • Use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Interpret and apply instructions, specification, blueprints, and procedures.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Entry level qualifications for the Operations Technician position:

  • Must hold a Massachusetts Stationary Third-Class Engineers License. (NOTE: a Massachusetts Stationary Second-Class Engineers License preferred.
  • High school graduate or equivalent. Associates degree in Mechanical Engineering or related studies preferred.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in related phases of power plant operation.
  • A thorough knowledge of plant equipment and systems. Proficiency and ability will be determined by the Watch Engineer.
  • Practical understanding of the application of super critical conditions as applied to the power plant cycle.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and understand blueprints, drawings, schematics, P&ID’s and instruction manuals.
  • The ideal candidate will also have a MA Grade 4I wastewater license.
  • The candidate must abide by Canal’s Code of Ethics, have the ability to build relationships, provide the highest level of customer service, exercise good judgment, remain flexible, communicate effectively, achieve goals that promote Canal’s best interest, work effectively as a team member, and accept challenges readily in a stressful environment. Additionally, the candidate must be able to manage multiple assignments at one time.
  • The candidate must the ability to develop personal computer skills and varied applications, i.e. Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Maximo.

EXPERIENCE

Preferred

  • 3 years: Experience in related phases of power plant operation.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS

Required

  • MA 3rd Class Engineers License

Preferred

  • MA Grade 4I Wastewater License
  • MA 2nd Class Engineer License

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Physical requirements include standing on feet for extended periods, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.
  • Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. On call status will periodically be required.
  • All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

In addition:

  • Ability to wear a respirator.
  • Work on or around energized electrical equipment.
  • Work at elevated heights including scaffolding.
  • Ability to work alone in remote areas.
  • Ability to work in dark areas or areas with limited lighting.
  • Work in ambient temperatures ranging from very cold to very hot.
  • Work in areas that may be noisy and dirty.
  • Possess good hearing and vision.
  • Ability to perform both indoor and outdoor tasks requiring continuous physical activity, sometimes of a strenuous and stressful nature.
  • Ability to work in enclosed vessels or confined spaces.

Wage Schedule

Position is located at Canal Generating LLC in Sandwich, MA. Hourly rate is consistent with the wage schedule established by agreement between GenOn Energy Services, LLC and the Utility Workers’ Union of America, Local #369.
