Reports to: Police Chief Pay Range:$95,747-$107,703 (4-STEP Plan)
NATURE OF WORK
A sergeant is a supervisory officer who has direct supervision and control over all personnel of the police department assigned to their command. Considerable independent judgment, initiative, and understanding must be exercised in interpreting orders, rules, and regulations and in meeting emergency situations. The sergeant shall set an example for all officers in courtesy, initiative, industry, diligence, truthfulness, courage, attention to duty, and the observance of proper discipline.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / FUNCTIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. · Coordinate the functions and activities of the assigned work group for which direct supervision and control has been assigned.
· Promptly obey all orders of the Chief of Police. They shall communicate and explain all orders and provide necessary information to subordinates. They must use discretion in matters where there is no written policy or procedure.
· Exercise his/her authority without bias, favoritism, or prejudice.
· Be familiar with and be held to a higher standard of knowledge of all police procedures, general and special orders, rules and regulations, policies, Town ordinances, and State laws.
· Issue clear, concise, definite, and proper orders to subordinates. They shall issue lawful orders in compliance with department rules and regulations. The sergeant's responsibility for the order does not end until the order is properly carried out.
· Be in charge of inspecting all subordinates' uniforms and leather equipment for neatness and cleanliness. They shall requisition any necessary replacement items.
· Assigns officers to patrol areas or areas of responsibility; relays and explains special orders and information.
· Supervises assigned subordinates' performance in the field and provides thorough training.
· Supervises and reviews the preparation and maintenance of various reports and records.
· May assume the role of a police officer to cover shifts as required.
· Perform periodic inspections of patrol units for cleanliness both inside and outside (including the trunk) and ensure that each patrol car is properly serviced and maintained.
· Completes annual performance appraisals of subordinates.
· May be assigned to act as supervisor of investigations, Field Training Officer, and or department training coordinator.
· May be assigned to coordinate Ride Along Program.
· Assist in or conduct internal investigations and follow up on citizen complaints.
· All other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
· Considerable knowledge of the principles of police administration and supervision and the ability to apply these principles to field operations and administration of the department.
· Problem-solving and community policing.
· Principles, practices, and techniques of crime prevention, adult and youth gang activity, and law enforcement, including investigation, patrol, traffic control, juvenile delinquency control, record keeping, and care and custody of persons and property.
· Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, regulations, and departmental rules and regulations.
· Knowledge of CCIC/NCIC rules and regulations in addition to security awareness.
· Methods and techniques of research, statistical analysis, and report presentation.
· Provide administrative and professional leadership for the department.
· Effectively formulate and administer sound departmental policies.
· Properly interpret and make decisions in accordance with laws, policies, and regulations.
· Ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, resourcefulness, and leadership in the administration of departmental personnel and in dealing with Town officials, outside agencies, the public, and the media.
· Establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates and the general public.
· Determine community needs and maintain positive relationships and a positive image with the community.
· Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
· Ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines.
· Skill in the operation of an automobile, and in the application, use and care of firearms.
RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
An Associate Degree is strongly preferred. POST certification is required and the applicant must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License. A minimum of three years of acceptable patrol corporal/sergeant experience with a recommendation from a superior officer. A demonstrated record and commitment toward professional self-development along with success of supervising personnel.
CONFIDENTIALITY
Has access to department confidential information, such as personnel records, reports, and personal information. Can be assigned further confidential information as deemed necessary by Town Management or Police Chief.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Work Schedule: This position requires shiftwork, am or pm start, rotating days of the week, and working days/evenings/weekends as schedule dictates.

This work requires varying degrees of physical responses from sedentary work to very heavy work due to the nature of unpredictable and unforeseeable events that characterize police work.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Work requires frequent driving, reading, verbal, and written communication, and frequent customer contact occasionally with citizens who are angry, upset, or distraught.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in high, precarious places; in outside weather conditions, and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, or blood pathogens, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration. The employee occasionally experiences hazards to personal safety from gun fire and physical confrontations. Periodically, the employee is in stressfulsituations. Must be able to frequently lift and or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift and or move up to 165 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
