Collects specimens on all age population as assigned with minimal patient impact. Collects blood specimens using venipuncture, skin puncture or appropriate technique and maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the tests performed. Responsible for the processing and allocation of laboratory specimens and orders from all sources. Responsible for verification of laboratory specimens and orders from all sources. Responsible for the verification of proper patient/specimen identification, appropriateness of specimen, accompanying orders, and proper labeling in front of patients when appropriate. Organizes laboratory workflow and appropriately prioritizes processing and distribution of specimens. Utilizes requisite equipment, instruments, and computer systems to test request, accession, correctly label and deliver specimens to appropriate laboratory sections within acceptable time frames. Performs specified procedures within scope of established testing methods and responsibilities. Performs other duties as assigned. Updates knowledge, skills, and applies appropriately. Maintains age-specific and other required competencies. Works both independently and as part of a team with general supervision and/or periodic review by supervisory staff. Follows Excellence Customer Service policies and explains phlebotomy procedures to patients and families. Adheres to all hospital and laboratory safety and compliance policies. Responds positively to change and demonstrates flexibility and teamwork. Competes all required training within expected time frames and meets technical training requirements and maintains awareness of procedure changes, completes competency testing, participates in continuing education/professional growth activities, and trains other. Records services on patient records and other administrative records. Stocks lab cart as needed. Performs a variety of clerical, receptionist duties and waived testing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Certified Phlebotomist preferred. Good knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. Good communication, time management, and organizational skills. Excellent patient care skills. Professional demeanor and ability to multi-task. Ability to retrieve, communicates, or otherwise presents information in a written, auditory or visual fashion. Ability to work with patients or specimens using current technology consistent with department and hospital policies and procedures. The primary method to express or exchange ideas is by the spoken work. Written, telephone and manual dexterity skills are required for this position. Knowledge of regulatory standards- i.e. CAP, Joint Commission, NPSG.

Required Education, Licenses, and Certifications:

• High School diploma or equivalent
• Completion of a phlebotomy training program
• Current BLS required
  

Preferred Education, Licenses, and Certifications:

• Certification by a national phlebotomy registry preferred
  

Other Information:

Light lifting up to 25 pounds, general motion including bending, squatting, reaching, carrying, pushing and pulling. Manual dexterity. Ability to speak plainly. Near visual acuity, ability to discern colors. May involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material.
