ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

An Iowa Orthopedic Physician Assistant provides health care services with direction and supervision by an Orthopedic Physician. Duties include, but are not limited to, performing diagnostic, therapeutic preventive, general orthopedic health related services in any setting in which the Physician renders care, including surgery. These would include but are not limited to:

  • Performs history and physical examinations on patients as directed by Physician, establishing the diagnosis, ordering of appropriate laboratory and other ancillary testing services and records findings.
  • Reviews patients' records.
  • Administers injections, including but not limited to, visco supplementation. Suture wounds and wound care.
  • Make complete chart entries on all patient transactions following CPT and ICD-9 coding guidelines as established by the AMA on the same day patient is seen.
  • Prepares written prescription orders for drugs and controlled substances following State of Iowa legal guidelines and recording same in patient record.
  • Provide counseling and instruction and education to patients.
  • Assist physician by dictating patient progress notes, discharge summaries, etc. as directed by Physician.
  • Triages patient phone calls, provides consultation and follows up as necessary and documents all conversations for the patient's chart on the same day as call was received.
  • Performs independent evaluations and treatment procedures in emergency situations.
  • Assist in setting up OR room, positioning of patients. Assist with surgical procedure and postoperative care as directed by Physician.
  • Assist with inpatient daily rounding as directed.
  • Performs on-call responsibilities as directed by Physician.
  • Performs emergency room duties as directed by Physician.

  • Exposure to communicable disease and body fluids is also possible.
  • Work may be done in a cool, dimly lit room, with a moderate noise level.
  • Use of fingers, hands, and sense of feeling in order to efficiently use a computer
  • Visual skills in order to read and use a computer
  • Ability to speak and give clear instructions; ability to hear in order to receive instructions
  • Ability to hear, write, read, and speak the English language without translation
  • Ability to be on one's feet for at least 9 hours a day; must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Ability to hold retraction for extent of surgery.


The ideal candidate for this position possesses:

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program
  • Experience with Orthopedics preferred
