We are currently seeking a Regional Functional Safety Engineer to join our team in Charleston, TN.


What you will do:

  • The Regional Functional Safety Engineer is responsible for providing technical leadership in functional safety at WACKER sites across the US region. Included in the role responsibilities are all facets of the SIS system safety lifecycle including SIL/SIF design, implementation, and testing as well as performing site audits to ensure strict compliance to all applicable corporate and industry standards. This position reports to the Engineering Manager, Regional Process Control & Digital Engineering Applications.
  • Subject matter expert for SIS engineering technical leadership with respect to design, implementation, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of SIS per ISA 84, IEC 61511, and IEC 61508 standards. Participate in Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA) and subsequent SIL Target Selection. Develop safety requirements specification (SRS) and cause and effect matrixes. Support the Process Safety Management (PSM) program including Process Safety Reviews (PSR's), Hazard Analysis (HAZOP), Root Cause Analysis (RCA’s), and Management of Change (MOC's). This role would also be available as instrumentation engineering expert. Additional this role would provide SIS subject matter expert support to site and regional engineering teams for projects.
  • Develop and review SIS/SIF Proof Test strategies and procedures, Safety Requirement Specifications (SRS), SIL calculations, and Functional Safety Assessments (FSA). Performs SIS Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and SIS validation. Perform and oversee the completion of Independent Protection Layer (IPL) Verifications as required.
  • Lead audits to enhance reliability of the SIS systems. Ensure SIS requirements are addressed in MOC and BYPASS Management work processes.
  • Develop and Maintain SIS Lifecycle Management database. Track SIS activations and report KPI’s associated with monitoring the health of SIS functions/device. Analyze SIS events and component failures to maintain regional SIS reliability data
  • Develop and deliver Functional Safety Training for internal engineering, operations, and maintenance team members to ensure all requirements for the WACKER Functional safety program are well understood by all team members who interact with or have responsibilities within the program

What we need from you:

  • BS Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical or Computer Engineering
  • 7+ years of professional engineering experience working PSM covered chemical facilities
  • ISA Certified Functional Safety Expert or CFSE licensure or the ability to obtain required.
  • Experience in Process Safety Management (PSM) programs
  • Ability to collaborate with regional and Engineering, Operations, in system design / architecture development in Functional Safety deliverables and the continuous improvement of the controls programs.
  • High level of proficiency with SAP or other inventory management software
  • Experience with industrial process control and safety systems (Siemens, DeltaV, HIMA, Triconix, etc.)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
  • Experience utilizing and/or maintaining Engineering tool/object-oriented database (preferably COMOS) in basic engineering, and/or as-built status.
  • Background in a chemical manufacturing or engineering environment in a project engineer or plant engineer role.
  • Highly motivated, self-directed, and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Work in a fast-paced and deadline driven environment while staying focused.
  • Solid organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, multi-task and troubleshoot. Effective planning and time management is vital to this role.
  • Strong interpersonal, written & verbal communication, and writing skills.
  • Ability to work well with others and comfortable with asking challenging questions.
  • Problem-solving aptitude.
  • Ability to self-teach and seek out other resources to create solutions in undefined areas.
