SUMMER NURSE:
This position is located in Nanjemoy, MD The core working hours vary. The exempt wage is $2000 per week.
INTRODUCTION The Summer Nurse oversees the health services program for Melwood’s summer seasonal recreation programs and ensures that participants receive appropriate medical care. The Summer Nurse provides oversight to ensure that medication is dispensed safely and properly. The Summer Nurse is responsible for the majority of on-site First Aid and staff and participant health and wellness.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provide health services to on-site participants and staff, ensuring that ACA, CARF, State of Maryland, and Melwood policies are followed and that individual campers receive person-centered medical care.
2. Participate actively in Recreation Center life, visiting participants and staff around camp. Provide assistance to the leadership team and general staff with ongoing participant health issues.
3. Complete necessary nursing assessments, documentation, and duties in accordance with generally accepted standards of nursing practice. Advise the leadership staff of any significant difficulties or barriers to completing assigned work.
4. Develop, maintain, and review medication administration records (MARs) for all participants at the Recreation Center who receive medication. Conduct additional in-service training and assist staff with preparation and error corrections.
5. Perform particular medical and health related procedures.
6. Respond to medical needs of participants and staff by being on property or on-call during programs and promptly perform face-to-face evaluation as needed.
7. Communicate with families, in consultation with the leadership team, in a proactive, person-centered, professional manner regarding health issues.
8. Maintain first aid kits around the facility, ensuring they are well stocked and available for staff as needed. 9. Provide excellent internal and external customer service

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The incumbent is supervised by the Program Director.
PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Must be able to sit/drive 30% of time; bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, and reach or otherwise position one-self to effectively assess individuals’ physical status 70% of time. Must be able to climb up and down stairs. Must possess good hearing and vision in order to drive and perform health assessments for individuals served and assess health/safety concerns of residential settings. Must be able to speak for effective communication. All of these requirements are necessary in order to assist youth and individuals with differing abilities. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment in potentially extreme weather conditions. Must be willing to work with people of all ages and ability levels, including personal care and lifting when necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be a registered nurse (RN) in Maryland and a graduate of an accredited program for nursing. BSN or related Bachelor’s degree is strongly preferred. Experience in camp/community nursing and individuals with developmental disabilities is desired. Proficiency in MS Office software applications and excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Must possess valid driver’s license and a good driving record. The incumbent is required to live onsite at the Recreation Center for the duration of the summer.
