Job Description :

Socks Construction, a privately held, family-owned business with a strong, stable presence in the Grand Traverse area, is seeking a VP of Construction Operations to join its team.

As Socks Construction looks to the future and continued steady, profitable growth, they are seeking an experienced construction/operations leader who can bring best practices to optimize business operations, while playing a key hands-on role in project estimating:

  • Works closely with the CEO to oversee daily operations to meet company goals for quality, service, and profitability.
  • Estimating and negotiating contracts to ensure a profitable and successful project.
  • Creates policies and procedures that ensure quality and consistency across projects and service lines.
  • Assists in developing standardized work processes that ensure quality and consistency; getting staff and ownership buy-in; effective training and implementation. Evaluate workflow and procedures between departments to suggest improvements and changes for efficient and effective work.
  • Develops systems and processes to address project issues, customer concerns, etc., and ensures measures are implemented to prevent future issues.
  • Evaluates resource needs (staffing, equipment, materials) and makes recommendations to the CEO to support company goals.
  • Manage vendor relationships to optimize the availability of resources and contract pricing.
  • Oversees project managers/project budgets to ensure timeliness, quality, and profitability. Collaborate with PMs to troubleshoot or address operational issues that impact project success.
  • Evaluates financials with CFO and Controller to identify trends, and opportunities for improvement, and to ensure the appropriate analysis to support business decisions.
  • Oversee the recruitment and onboard staff.
  • Collaborates with company leadership to identify skills and expertise required to support ongoing growth and business opportunities. Provides input to the development and delivery of training, mentoring, and other apprenticeship opportunities to support employee development.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of Project Management and Estimating experience in civil construction or a related field.
  • Ability to lead change and gain organizational support and buy-in to operational policies and systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced business focused on quality and outstanding service.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedure best practices in construction or related field.
  • Strong communication skills to work effectively with team members, key stakeholders, vendors, and everyone else involved in a project or operation.
  • Excellent time management skills to keep tasks and activities on track and according to schedule.
  • Leadership skills to effectively manage a team and offer coaching or motivation when required.
  • Organizational acumen to keep track of all of the various complex moving pieces involved in a project or ongoing operations of a business.
  • Problem-solving and adaptability are required to be flexible and adjust as necessary.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to pitch in where needed to help the company meet its commitments.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Suite)
  • Proficiency with critical path software and procurement software
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to travel to customer/job sites as needed. Travel will vary from week to week but will generally be within 50 miles of Traverse City

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $93,168.26 - $135,537.22 per year
