JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Work Instruction Developer and CAD Draftsman

GapVax, Inc. is a Johnstown, PA manufacturer of vacuum trucks and related equipment. To increase production and standardize processes, GapVax has created a new position for a Work Instruction Developer & CAD Draftsman. This position requires an Associate's Degree in CAD drafting because CAD depictions of assemblies are often the best way to represent an assembly in a work instruction. In addition, the Work Instruction Developer can assist with CAD drafting tasks in between work instruction projects. The primary duty is assisting the Engineering Department with CAD drafting tasks. GapVax anticipates that work instructions and bills of materials will be the main focus for the first two years. Once a baseline library of work instructions is established, more effort may shift to drafting duties.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: This position reports to the Engineering Department Manager

1. BACKGROUND ON WORK INSTRUCTIONS USED AT GAPVAX: Standardize and document Bills of Materials, layouts, build process, sequence, special instructions, etc., for weldments and assemblies. GapVax uses kits of materials used in gathered parts required to complete assemblies. Work Instructions are used to validate the Bills of Materials for these kits in the M1 production management software system.

  • Move certain assembly tasks from the main assembly station to sub-assembly stations
  • Assist warranty & service personnel with repairs
  • A work instruction will use photographs and CAD model representations to:
  • Identify the Bill of Materials in an assembly or process
  • Provide information on assembly sequence or order of operation
  • Identify any special requirements such as use of sealants, torque settings, etc.
  • Identify consumables, safety or hazard information

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES for Work Instruction Development

  • Develop work instructions to document BoMs, manufacturing and assembly processes using MS Excel, Word and/or Publisher
  • Use clear photos of actual assemblies and/or use CAD representations
  • Ensure that work instructions are consistent with formal hydraulic, water, electrical & pneumatic schematics
  • Ensure that work instructions are consistent with GapVax technical manuals
  • Maintain version control & effectivity dates of work instructions

2. BACKGROUND ON BILLS OF MATERIALS (BoM)/CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT

  • GapVax uses “kits” of materials used in gather parts required to complete assemblies
  • These kits and their associated BoMs are managed using an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software
  • The development of work instructions or other engineering changes will require that the BoMs and kits in the ERP system will need to be revised and updated for accuracy

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES for Configuration Specialist in Maintaining Bills of Materials (BoM)

  • Ensure that the BoMs in the ERP system and work instructions match each other
  • Update the BoMs in the ERP systems to reflect the current revision of the work instruction as changes occur
  • Make necessary notes in the ERP system to document “from-to” changes

3. BACKGROUND ON ENGINEERING CHANGE REQUESTS and NOTICES (ECR, ECN)

  • GapVax wants to implement and maintain more formalized ECR/ECN process to document any major design changes that will:
  • Result in obsolescence
  • Affect backwards compatibility
  • Address a safety issue
  • The ECR, ECN process will typically affect fabricated and manufactured items

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES for ECRs and ECNs

  • Work with Engineering Department to identify changes that require and ECR/ECN
  • Prepare ECR/ECN paperwork for routing/review/approval
  • Maintain ECR/ECN files for reference
  • Make changes to Work Instructions and BoMs in the ERP system to reflect approved ECNs

4. OTHER COLLATERAL DUTIES

  • Assist the Engineering Department with CAD drafting tasks as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE:

  • Associates degree in CAD drafting. Experience with CREO/Pro E a plus.
  • Working knowledge of MS Excel.
  • Working knowledge of Corel Draw or similar graphics software. (GapVax can provide training in this area if the candidate has a basic capability with graphics software).
  • Technical writing experience.
  • Two years of experience in related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read, understand and follow electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and water schematics and diagrams used in production.
  • Ability to work with shop floor technicians, foremen and members of the engineering department.
  • Ability to communicate technical matters clearly verbally and in writing.
