Job Summary
The Crop Administrator (Brassicas) will be responsible for overseeing custom farming, joint venture and other seasonal (Brassica) contracts with outside growers. This Agricultural position requires a high level of interaction with 3rd party growers and an ability communicate the current status of the crop(s) to grower and to Mann’s Field Ops department.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
· Develop the specifics of the planting schedule based on budget volume forecast from sales and historical/projected yield data from Director of Brassicas. To include both Mann custom growing contracts and field direct pound sourcing programs for both local and regional sourcing.
· Collaborate as directed on variety, spacing, populations and locations in planting schedule.
· Assist QAFS in preseason risk assessments.
· Collect and enter grower’s planting information.
· Verify acreage, crop viability and growth using standardized metrics.
· Maintain and broaden grower relationships under to ensure future acreage capacity to facilitate company growth and profitability.
· Develop a plan to react to changes in LE volumes while maintaining contract assumptions.
· Develop Agronomically sound plan to adopt automated harvesting and associated cost reductions.
· Update and maintain actual seasonal planting schedules on a regular basis.
· Interface with other Mann field ops staff & directors in a collaborative manner to discuss cross or intra departmental topics or crop issues with shared beneficial resolution results as the end goal.
· Discussion may lead to processes improvements and intra-departmental solutions to shared issues, such as growing recommendations for seasonal crops rotations on shared growers ground, etc. that will aid and assist overall Mann growing efficiencies and costings.
· Communicate with plant operations and QA stakeholders on quality feedback for growers.
· Review field yield assumptions vs current performance and inform field department of variance.
· Collaborate with Brassicas seed companies on potential new Brassicas varietal offerings via field trials to determine year round viability and costing modeling.
· Interface with Director of Brassicas, and in collaborative manner, identify areas of improvement within departments to improve processes such as overages or shortages of raw material situations and develop plan of action to mitigate negative impact on business, which will enable potential cost savings, improved quality, varietal selection options improvements, etc.
· Work with new product development teams to ensure that brassica projects put in motion meet agronomic objectives.
· Establish a quarterly grower meeting schedule with current growers to review existing volume plans and update on potential additional volumes.
· Verify grower plantings are being planted as shown on planting schedule reports and maintain planting records within the SAP/Vistex environment.
· Monitor internal and grower Broccolini seed inventories and seed coating program.
· Mann’s Current Brassicas portfolio includes Broccoli, Broccolini, Cauliflower, Caulilini, Kohlrabi and Brussels sprouts (Conventional and Organic) with emphasis assigned by Director of Brassicas.
· Current Crop locations are Salinas Valley and neighboring Central coast counties, Imperial County and Mexicali Valleys.
Educational & Job Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture sciences or equivalent work experience.
· 1+ years of proven experience,
· Licensed PCA preferred
· General P&L knowledge and experience influencing margin improvement
· Proven ability to collaborate with department, grower base and suppliers to achieve goal
· Negotiation skills
· Polished leadership skills
· Project Management
· Ability to develop strategy while managing and implementing planned tactics
· Ability to think strategically, creatively, and analytically
· Exceptional oral and written skills in English; Verbal proficiency in Spanish is desired
· Strong computer skills, including demonstrated proficiencies in all Microsoft Office Applications, and willingness to learn and function in the corporate ERP (SAP)
· Ability to travel consistently to manage overlapping crop regions
